"Phoenix" - Broadcast quality realtime compressed video playback
PHOENIX is a realtime decompressor for PC that can playback fullcolor
fullsize fullmotion video with broadcast quality from the computer memory and/or
the hard disk.
Features:
- Video playback from memory and HDD in realtime
- Eliminates time-consuming, tape and VCR wearing
frame-by-frame recording
- No mechanical glitches, skipped frames and
type dropouts
- Fullsize fullcolor realtime preview without tape recording
- Original compression algorithm guarantees broadcast quality
- Video output quality is user selectable - from preview to
broadcast quality
- No phantoms, noise and other JPEG distortions
- Synchronous playback of video & audio
Block diagram
Technical specifications:
- Video output: RGB (RS-170)
- Color resolution: 8 bit per R,G,B components
- Resolution: 512x512 or 768x576 (chess)
- Power consumption: about 20 Watt
- Compression ratio: 3 (lossless) to 20 (preview)
- Up to 5 minutes of movie off a 1 GB hard disk
- software compression speed (the time is provided for one frame):
less than 8(486DX2-66)/3(Pentium-90) seconds for 512x512 resolution
less than 13(486DX2-66)/5(Pentium-90) seconds for 768x576 resolution
- Video standard: PAL, Y/C or analog component (Y,R-Y,B-Y) - Optional (with coder)
The software (DDFilmer) makes the compression and facilitates an assembly of
the video from fragments, which are stored as a sequence of TGA files, a
FLI file or other. During the playback, the compressed video data is
read from the hard disk(s) and through the memory into the PHOENIX board. The
latter decompresses the data in real time and passes the videosignal
onto an RGB-monitor and/or through the coder into a VCR and/or
TV-monitor. High speed data transfer is provided by a fast computer bus,
fast adapters, and use of the host computer RAM as the video data transfer
buffer.
Hardware requirements:
- PC AT/486 with PCI, EISA or VESA local bus (VLB)
- 16 MB of RAM (or more)
- Fast SCSI-2 hard drives (upto 4 disks)
- Fast SCSI-2 controller card on the respective fast bus
(PCI, EISA or VLB)
- Sound card - if sound is to be used
Software requirements:
- DOS & MS Windows 3.XX or Windows-95.
- ASPI-manager for SCSI-controller card - optional
- Hard drive defragmentation software - recommended
- Sound card driver for Windows - if sound is to be used
