If you have a poor connection and have difficulties downloading our binaries...
then here you will find some useful hints. Try any of the following or
all three.
-
If your modem (or whatever) disconnects often, consider using FTP
client program with REGET. Most of our large files that are provided
here via HTTP are also accessible via FTP. FTP protocol has REGET
facility, allowing to resume the download from the point where the
connection had dropped. That is, if you downloaded 9 megabytes of 10
megabytes total, you need not start from the very beginning.
Unfortunately not all FTP clients support REGET. Here's the list
of clients that do:
- any UNIX command line FTP client we know of.
- FTP explorer - ftp
client for Windows95 and Windows NT 4.0. Can automatically re-connect
to the remote site and resume the download.
- CuteFTP - ftp
client for Windows 3.1 and Windows95
- WS_FTP professional - ftp
client for Windows 3.x, 95 and NT
- Bullet Proof FTP - ftp
client for Windows95 and NT
-
There are other programs that provide similar functionality with
HTTP protocol. One of them is:
The server you are downloading from must support partial requests
in order for you to be able to resume the download.
-
Next, there's an utility with a self-descriptive name,
ReGet, that can employ
both FTP anfd HTTP protocols.
- Switching from one Internet provider to another (if you have
more than one) may improve the situation.
- Try again at another time of day.
www.tucows.com is a big software
repository, and has many FTP clients and download managers,
some of them may do what you want.
