SoftLab-Nsk - Space Station "Mir" demo
This page instructs how to get and how to use the Mir demo,
and contains other important information.
Please read the instructions carefully.

All proposals regarding development of virtual reality applications
are welcome.

The Mir Demo, referred to in this document as "demo"
is provided as is, without a warranty of any kind,
express or implied.
You are free to re-distribute the demo, provided that the contents of the
package is left unchanged.
By downloading the demo you agree to use it solely for evaluation,
demonstration or educational purposes.
Requirements

IBM PC 486DX or compatible with a math co-processor
(Pentium highly recommended)
-
vesa-compatible VGA card with at least 512K videoRAM.
Vast majority of modern videocards meet this criteria,
so most likely does yours. Some older cards require
some program started before the application, to provide
vesa-compatible interface.
(Do not mix with vesa local bus - this is a different thing.)

8 Megabytes of memory

Mouse
-
DOS 5.0 or higher or Windows95. When Windows95 is used, DOS mode is strongly recommended

DOS driver for the mouse. (Also needed in DOS mode of Win95, but not in Win95 dos window.)
To get the demo running:
-
Download (1,822,782 bytes) the demo.
When asked about how to handle the file,
choose "Save To Disk", and select the location where you want the demo
to reside; it should be some empty directory. Now you can click here to download the demo.
If you have problems downloading the demo via http,
the same demo is available via ftp, at
ftp://ftp.softlab-nsk.com/pub/mirdemo.exe

The file is a self-extracting archive.
When the file is downloaded,
or go to DOS and in the directory where you saved the file enter
mirdemo
-d
<enter>
several files and a subdrectory will be created as a result of the extraction.
Note: the "-d" option in the above command is critical.
If the switch is omitted, the demo will not work.

To start the demo enter
run_me.bat
Command reference
Once you started the demo, use the following keys and actions to
control it:

To navigate around the station -
- press and hold the left mouse button and drag the mouse.
If the button released when there is a motion, the motion is not ceasing,
as if by inertia.

To move closer to / further from the station-
- press and hold the right mouse button and drag the mouse.

To exit the demo -
- press <escape> key and hit QUIT in the menu.
