SoftLab-Nsk - Driving Simulator demo
This page instructs how to get and how to use the Driving Simulator demo,
and contains other important information.
Please read the instructions carefully.
Here
you can find the overall description of the project and of the demo.
All proposals regarding development of virtual reality applications
are welcome.
Disclaimer
The Driving Simulator Demo, referred to in this document as "demo"
is provided as is, without a warranty of any kind,
express or implied.
You are free to re-distribute the demo, provided that the contents of the
package is left unchanged.
By downloading the demo you agree to use it solely for evaluation,
demonstration or educational purposes.
Requirements
-
IBM PC 486DX or compatible with a math co-processor
(Pentium highly recommended)
-
vesa-compatible VGA card with at least 512K videoRAM.
Vast majority of modern videocards meet this criteria,
so most likely does yours. Some older cards require
some program started before the application, to provide
vesa-compatible interface.
(Do not mix with vesa local bus - this is a different thing.)
-
12 Megabytes of RAM (about 10M of free extended memory)
-
Mouse
-
DOS 5.0 or higher or Windows95. When Windows95 is used, DOS mode is strongly recommended
-
DOS driver for the mouse. (Also needed in DOS mode of Win95, but not in Win95 dos window.)
Comments:
- The drive is essentially one way. The program will not let you
turn around. The only place where you can (and have to) turn
around is not long before the end; it is when you face the big
palace beyond the "T"-turn, then you should make the "U"-turn (to
the left) and go the back way along the other side of the same
prospect.
- Normally, the dynamical subsystem of the simulator takes care of
the user not to let him make "prohibited" actions. (Drive to the
gutter, crash of the buildings etc.). Here in this demo it is made
in somewhat simplified way - do not be surprised if you encounter
an "invisible wall" you will slide off. This is a mean to keep you
out of the prohibited areas.
- As the drive is one way, eventually you will come to the
end of it and will not be able to turn around. (It is
when you are about to pass the monument the second time,
on the way back.). Just re-start the drive.
- A similar demo program is Car Races
Demo . It is from a different project, a completely different
scene, and it has interesting effects in it.
To get the demo running:
-
Download (2,275,063 bytes) the demo. When asked about how to handle the file,
choose "Save To Disk", and select the location where you want the demo
to reside; it should be some empty directory. Now you can click here to download the demo.
If you have problems downloading the demo via http,
the same demo is available via ftp, at
ftp://ftp.softlab-nsk.com/pub/drivdemo.exe
For hints on dealing with
poor connections click here.
-
The file is a self-extracting archive.
When the file is downloaded, either click on it to start if you are in Windows,
or go to DOS and in the directory where you saved the file enter
drivdemo.exe <enter>
several files will be created as a result of the extraction.
-
To start the demo enter:
drive.bat <enter>
